Theatre on the Square comes alive again

The liveliness has once again returned to the Theatre on the Square after it was finally able to reopen.

Sandton’s oldest theatre, which had been closed for almost two years due to Covid-19 restrictions, recently had a soft reopening with limited audiences for small live events, conferences, film shoots and launches.

According to owner Daphne Kuhn, the theatre struggled financially during its extended closure, so all of the staff was beyond excited to finally see new faces in the establishment.

With the help of the community and substantial fundraising drives, the 24-year-old theatre located in Nelson Mandela Square was able to raise money to keep itself afloat.

“Now that we are finally able to have 50% of our capacity, we want to do this [the reopening] slowly. We are extremely strict with all of the Covid-19 protocols and ask people to bring their vaccination certificates,” she said.

Kuhn added that the theatre has opened at a time when the community needs uplifting and something positive to look forward to.

“In the new year we are planning to hopefully open with our plays, comedies and other light-hearted shows that also have a bit of substance because I think that everyone wants to be entertained.

“[The arts] hasn’t died because we believe that the theatre is the most important tool of uplifting entertaining and educating people. “
