Redhill ballerina leaps to new heights

MORNINGSIDE – The Grade 9 learner also recently performed at the American Dance Awards where she qualified to represent South Arica on the international stage next year.

This Redhill School performer continues to dominate on the national stage.

Fourteen-year-old Raphaella Haralambous not only achieved five podium finishes in the recent National Eisteddfod Ballet Championships but she also concluded each subcategory in ballet and modern with a score of more than 80%.

According to Raphaella, it felt amazing to be back on stage after two years due to Covid-19 restrictions.

“I was very happy with my performances, and delighted and proud when I heard the results – the National Eisteddfod is a prestigious event and the competition was very tough.”

Raphaella added that performing was in her blood and she has continued to give it to her all from the age of four when she attended her first ballet lesson, and eight when she first took up modern.

“My favourite thing about dancing and performing is being on stage and being able to express myself and my emotions through dance. I love the adrenaline rush just before I go on stage, when I’m on stage I have not a worry in the world.”

The young prodigy admitted that while ballet looked challenging, it actually kept her motivated to continue improving.

“I dance six to seven days a week, balancing my dance life with my schooling and social life can often be challenging but when you are doing something you love your work around it,” she said.

Raphaella added that being on stage had taught her true dedication, hard work and how to grow a thick sink because the world of dance could be tough.

“It has also taught me time management and perseverance.”

The Grade 9 learner also recently performed in the American Dance Awards where she qualified to represent South Africa on the international stage next year.

“I would like to thank my ballet teachers Jo, Monique and Celeste as well as my modern teachers Amber and Jess from Dancers Studio for all their hard work, encouragement and for believing in me.”
