Kendo club comes alive

RIVONIA – The Rivonia Kendo Club Dojo was finally able to host its Spring Championships after three postponements.

The atmosphere at Rivonia Sports Club came alive on October 16 as the Rivonia Kendo Club (RKC) Dojo hosted a successful Spring Championship.

The nail-biting tournament saw scores of members from various dojos, which practice in the traditional Japanese martial art of kendo, give it their all on October 16 at the dojo at Rivonia Sports Club.

According to the dojo’s Warren Ho, the Rivonia Kendo Club was happy to finally get the tournament under way after it was forced to rescheduled three times of account of the lockdown.

The dojo was finally able to host the championships in such a way that would allow spectators and most importantly, ensure the safety of its competitors.

“It was an exciting day of competition, filled with some amazing kendo, surprise upsets and even a medical emergency that resulted in the pulling out of a competitor,” said Ho.

This event was also a special one for the RKC family as all of the proceeds collected from the tournament will go towards the Domo Initiative, aimed at helping the club’s ‘kendo kids’ obtain the equipment that they need to development their kendo journey.

Ho added that for many of the dojo’s court staff, it was their first competition.

“Yet they still did an amazing job of putting in a successful event.”

The dojo looks forward to hosting its next championship.
