Sandton School Group encourages giving back

SANDTON – The learners have thus far made non-perishable food packs, sandwiches, toiletry packs and knitted blankets for vulnerable people and homeless shelter networks in the area.

Sandton School Group encourages its learners to give back to the community and the environment.

Every Friday afternoon, learners from the school are given the opportunity to participate in various extra-mural activities, including participating in the outreach programme.

According to executive head Nadya Katz, the outreach programme is a relatively new addition to the school’s extra-curricular activities but the response has been positive thus far.

“Learners have made over 200 food packs and sandwiches, and during the winter knitting drive, were able to knit over 150 squares from which to make blankets,” said Katz.

The learners also recently assisted in planting and preparing spekboom plants for World Environment Day. The plants were handed out to each learners and teacher to be planted in their gardens at home and nearby areas.

“The [outreach] programme ensures that learners only use biodegradable and eco-friendly paper packets, and eco-brick and any non-recyclable plastic waste created by the Friday afternoon’s activities,” said Katz.
