Young scientists in South Africa prepare for the annual science fair

SANDTON – “Eskom Expo has a large tradition of doing exactly that, with more than 100 000 learners from 35 regions in South African, as well as some African countries, taking part annually,” says Jevanne Gibbs

The annual South African science fair, Eskom Expo for Young Scientists will start from August 26 to September 11.

The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists is a South African exposition that is aimed at showcasing scientific research made by high school learners from all regions of South Africa. The exhibit is aimed at brilliant and talented students who aspire to change the world through their ideas and creativity.

Learners from all races, regions and family backgrounds are given an opportunity of a lifetime to display their creation at a large scale where international exposure is present.

Even with the presence of the pandemic, the science fair ensures it will apply safety measures to prevent participants from contacting Covid-19.A total of 1 278 participants was recorded in the entry of the science fair.

Covid-19, fortunately, did not disturb the progress of the learners who will be participating in the event. The science fair provided the learners with online meeting sessions for support and online resources for additional information on their projects.

The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO). The science fair is funded by the Eskom Development Foundation, which focuses on the development of the youth in key areas such as engineering and science skill development. Other than supplying electricity to the millions of South Africa, the organisation creates a platform to acknowledge the learners on their understanding projects and to further develop their concept.

Jevanne Gibbs, PR and Social Media Coordinator of Eskom Expo for Young Scientists says, “Eskom Expo has a large tradition of doing exactly that, with more than
100 000 learners from 35 regions in South African, as well as some African countries, taking part annually.”

Participants of the science fair stand a chance to win amazing prizes when placed third, second and first. Prizes include laptops, university scholarships and the participation in the prestigious International Science Fair, where young scientists from all over the world will compete against each other and share their ideologies.

“The value of the competition lies in its ability to bridge the gap between the classroom knowledge and the application of such skills to address issues that confront the societies on the African continent. The developmental needs of communities require innovative interventions and fresh applications of scientific and technological solutions,” says Cecil Ramonotsi, CEO of the Eskom Development Foundation.

The annual Eskom Expo for Young Scientists will virtually host nine provincial exposition this year and one International Science Fair (ISF) from October 4 to October 8
