Redhill School Olympiad ranks internationally

MORNINGSIDE – Abigail Davies’ hard work and preparation paid off when she represented South Africa and took home a bronze medal.

Redhill School learner Abigail Davies flew the country’s flag high in the recent International Geography Olympiad (iGeo).

The virtual Olympiad, hosted by Turkey, saw learners from 46 countries undergo a number of tests.

Abigail’s hard work and preparation paid off when she represented South Africa and took home a bronze medal.

According to South African National Geography Olympiad’s Dr Clinton van der Merwe, Abigail was one of four learners, and the only girl, on the South African team.

“This was the first time that South Africa was competing in the iGeo since 2004. Overall the team did really well, they gave it their all and ranked 40th out of 46 countries,” he said.

“Abigail in particular ranked an overall 77th out of 180 learners from across the world.”

Van der Merwe added that Abigail qualified to receive the bronze medal as an individual team member.

Redhill School executive head Joseph Gerassi shared the school’s delight and joy for the learner.

“Abigail never ceases to grab hold of every opportunity life has to offer, even in a global pandemic.” he said.

Gerassi added that Abigail continued to excel far beyond any expectations.

“To have won a bronze medal while representing her country in the International Geography Olympiad is an exceptional achievement from a student who inspires other students to reach further than they dreamed possible.

“We are extremely proud of her and delighted for her and her family,” he said.
