Sandton resident and Grade 11 St Stithians College learner Amukelani Leeuw devotes his time to crafting his fashion brand

Sandton – “I have found a balance and I am happy I can still get good grades without sacrificing one of my passions," says Amukelani.

It is never too late or too early to follow your dreams.

A primary example of the saying is Amukelani Leeuw, a high school learner who is following his passion for fashion.

Sandton resident and Grade 11 St Stithians College learner Amukelani Leeuw devotes his time to developing his fashion brand, Project Studios. He was introduced to the world of fashion at a very young age by his aunt, grandmother and mother, despite having no professional background. The youngster started designing clothes as a hobby when he was just 13 years old.

Amukelani explained how he managed to juggle both his school work and his passion. “I make time for everything in my life, I am a very organised person. I also work hard and very efficiently so I don’t find myself pressured by anything. I have found a balance and I am happy I can still get good grades without sacrificing one of my passions. I am also surrounded by great students, so they motivate me to work hard in school and are always there to guide and help me.”

The learner builds his confidence every day through a motto that he lives by, “Always push boundaries. Never imitate. Design and innovate.”

As many people find fashion inspirations through past creations or through other people’s ideas, Amukelani finds his inspiration through a number of different factors. “Music is probably one of my inspirations. Artists such as Beyoncé, Rick Ross, Earl Sweatshirt, HHP, Cassper Nyovest, Seba Kaapstad and many more always keep me inspired. Music gives me different perspectives, emotions and ideas behind what I do. Also, cartoons. To this day I have a deep love for animation which inspires me to push my own boundaries.”

Despite being a high school learner and young in the fashion design world, Amukelani has already attracted many individuals’ attention. One of them is local rapper Shugasmakx from Skwatta Kamp, who has mentored him on how to develop and leave a fashion legacy behind.

Amukelani, who is originally from Mafikeng, shows no signs of slowing down his dreams and passion of becoming a fashion designer as he continues to produce more clothing while learning.

When asked about his future after high school, he responded, “I’m considering going overseas, either to New York or to London to continue my venture with fashion and also study business.”
