Community unites in fight against crime

MARLBORO GARDENS – Ashraful Aid aim to have Marlboro in its entirety, as well as the neighbouring suburbs of Kelvin and Buccleuch, under the surveillance network to improve monitoring across the suburbs.

The community of Marlboro Gardens has taken active steps to combat crime hotspots in the area.

The Ashraful Aid humanitarian organisation, together with MNW Security Services, launched a remote CCTV monitoring network in parts of the community on July 2. The initiative comes after an increased number of crime incidents were reported by the community.

According to Ashraful Aid executive director Moulana Suhail Wadee, this is one of the ways in which the organisation is giving back to the community that it has been part of for over two decades now.

“In an effort to reduce crime in the Marlboro area and to make people feel safe and more secure, we decided to kick off and invest in this important community project. We are grateful to MNW who didn’t hesitate to come on board and offer their support,” said Wadee.

Speaking on behalf of Bramley Police Station, Colonel Owen King highlighted the importance of community partnerships in the fight against crime. “The camera initiative goes a long way to make communities feel safe and also to ensure the area is safe, it will certainly help us in our fight against crime,” he said.

King added that the police cannot fight alone; officers require the assistance of every non-profit organisation, every role player in any sector as well as the communities themselves to be part of the fight against crime.

King thanked Ashraful Aid, the Bramley CPF and ward councillor Liaquad Ebrahim for their ongoing availability, support and partnership in assisting the police to fight crime in the area.

Bramley CPF chairperson Shoquat Suliman and councillor Ebrahim noted that Ashraful Aid has always been instrumental in the fight again crime in the area. “Marlboro falls under Sector 1 where we found crime is getting very high. We are aware of the hotspots and especially thankful for the installation of the camera at the cemetery, where we have had a lot of incidences,” said Suliman.
