‘Superheroes without capes’ – nurse

The Prestige Nurses organisation aims to showcase and highlight the commitment of nurses across the country.

International Nurses Day continues to highlight the importance of nurses in the healthcare chain but do we fully understand the magnitude of their commitment?

On the internationally recognised day (12 May) the Prestige Nurses organisation hosted a lunch to pay gratitude to the hardworking nurses in the community at the Saint Restaurant in Sandton. The organisation aims to showcase and highlight the commitment of nurses across the country while providing them with support and a sense of community.

Being a cardiothoracic nurse herself, founder Kgalalelo Megalane has had first-hand experience of the impact a nurse can make in any department and Prestige Nurse hopes to highlight these phenomenal men and women.

“The Prestige Nurse is a magnificent and transformational way of defining nurses. So many times before nurses have not really been appreciated for their work and their commitment, we are working on ways to change that.”

She added that nurses were essential ‘superheroes without capes’ which is why supporting and honouring them is so important. “We are the first and last people to see patients and [we] go above and beyond our call of duty each day,” added Megalane.

Fellow Prestige Nurses member Grace Cele added that this event was important for her as it honours her fellow nurses, especially after the strenuous year that everyone experienced.

“There were challenging days, and then there were unbearable days and during the peak of Covid-19, we heavily relied on one another to get through the day. These were essentially the only people who truly understood what you are going through on a daily basis, they were some of the only people who could relate to the strain of a double 12-hour shift,” said Cele.

“Nursing is a noble profession and a service to humanity, a service with high ethical principles that becomes one with you and your work,” concluded Megalane.
