Police warn of increased hijackings at Buccleuch interchange

BUCCLEUCH – Xulu said the hijacking trend does not focus on a specific type or model of vehicle, but rather taking advantage of an opportunity that is advantageous to criminals.

Sandton police warn motorists of a surge in hijacking incidents taking place at the Buccleuch interchange.

A spokesperson for the Sandton Police Station Captain Bheki Xulu said, “The amount of vehicles hijacked in the vicinity keeps on increasing continuously.”

He said the hijacking trend does not focus on a specific type or model of vehicle, but rather taking advantage of an opportunity that is advantageous to criminals, according to the reported incidents.

“Police records indicate that there is no specific time that these incidents take place, but most are reported during the day,” said Xulu.

He advised motorists to take the following precautions:

  • Be aware of your surroundings, including the vehicles behind, in front of and to the sides of you
  • Keep a following distance between you and the vehicle in front of you
  • Do not stop when another vehicle begins to flash its lights. Rather drive to the nearest safe place to stop
  • Avoid parking or stopping on the side of the road
  • Do not sit inside your vehicle when you experience problems. Rather try to seek help as quickly as possible
  • Do not ask for directions from anyone. Rather go to the nearest police station to ask for directions
  • Drive with caution at all times.
