Brescia House empowers its girls

BRYANSTON – For every girl that Siyakunakekela trains at Brescia House School they will also train a girl in a township school.

Brescia House School is taking an active role in empowering more young girls.

The Bryanston all-girls school recently announced that it had partnered with Siyakunakekela to teach and empower its girls through self-defence classes.

“Over the next couple of months, it is our goal to train every girl in the high school to defend herself and to equip her with the skills she would need in a difficult situation,” said life orientation teacher Candice Nel who is spearheading the programme.

In line with Covid-19 protocols, there will be no contact between instructors and participants, and instructors and team leaders will demonstrate the techniques for the girls to replicate. The girls will learn key moves to help defend themselves, helping them feel stronger regardless of their physical size or strength.

Nel added that the aim of the initiative was to develop an awareness of one’s surroundings, build confidence and heighten one’s reflexes. For every girl that Siyakunakekela trains at Brescia House School, they will also train a girl in a township school.

“Crimes against women in South Africa show that femicide is five-times higher than the global average. Every young girl must be empowered and every young girl must know how to defend herself.

“We are proud to be piloting this initiative at Brescia House School and look forward to rolling it out over the next few months. We are so pleased that, not only will our girls learn to defend themselves, but that this programme forms part of a bigger picture in that girl from underprivileged communities will also benefit from this.’
