Morningside power lines in the clear

MORNINGSIDE – The accelerated programme was in response to a recent investigation by the city entity into the cause of frequent outages affecting the north-eastern corridor.

City Power continues to drive its three-week programme to patrol and clear any obstructions affecting electricity supply in Morningside on 16 April.

The accelerated programme was in response to a recent investigation by the City entity into the cause of frequent outages affecting the north-eastern corridor.

“The investigation found that, while most of the outages were due to vandalism and cable theft, a worrying number was due to faults on the overhead lines caused by encroaching objects, including trees and buildings,” said MMC of Environment and Infrastructure Services Mpho Moerane.

This is especially in and around Senderwood, Sandringham, Bedfordview and Morningside where access to the areas is often restricted.

A team from the City entity visited Morningside after a worrying number of recent outages were due to faults on overhead lines as a result of obstructing walls and trees. A number of trees were trimmed and the relevant City departments were approached to deal with the walls that were found to have been built under the transmission lines.

City Power CEO Mongezi Ntsokolo said that the entity will be prioritising this blanket programme to clear all of the intrusions. He urges the community to cooperate with the teams over the coming weeks and allow them to access areas where the trees are on private property.

Awareness campaigns will also be intensified to educate communities against the dangers of building under the servitudes, as this breaks the City’s by-laws.

“We also need to be clear and tough to those who refuse us to cut trees in their yards, we will use the law where needs are, to ensure by-laws are respected. No one is allowed to build a structure or plant trees underline. It’s not only dangerous,” concluded Moerane.
