Wanderers women’s captain led team to victory

ILLOVO – Having started her journey as a cricket player at the young age of eight, she has always had a great passion and appreciation for the sport.

Wanderers women’s cricket team captain Yashika Dinna made history as she led her team to victory.

Dinna, who became the first female captain of a Wanderers cricket team, led her team to victory when they won the Central Gauteng Lions Imperial Women’s Premier League on 10 April.

Needing a bonus point against Caxton Khosa Cricket Club, the team gave a phenomenal performance winning by 116 runs. For Dinna, this would without a doubt be a memorable moment in her career as a captain.

Having started her journey as a cricket player at the young age of eight, she has always had a great passion and appreciation for the sport. “I have always wanted to take cricket seriously. I definitely had a desire to become a professional cricketer as a youngster.

“Unfortunately, I didn’t do so in my high school years and followed a different passion, basketball, but in 2019 I started looking for a ladies cricket team, and fortunately I found Wanderers. It’s been all cricket since then,” she said.

“This is my third year at Wanderers Club and it’s been an amazing journey. Coach Graham McMillan has created an incredible development program at the club and I am so grateful for everything he has done to help me improve.”

Dinna added that through her journey she had seen women’s cricket in South Africa grow, changing the cricketing environment for the better and motivating other women to join the sport.

She urged young women to get onto the field even if they have never played cricket before. “Go for it. Wanderers Club is a great place to start at any age.”
Youth practices occur on a Friday for junior girls of all ages. Anyone interested can contact 076 043 1275 for more information.
