Sandton youth invited to apply to combat crime in their community

SANDTON – Youth between the ages of 18 and 35 are encouraged to apply.

Sandton youth are invited to join the Sandton Police Station’s youth desk.

Warrant Officer Cynthia Segoa said the purpose of the programme was to educate youth and steer them away from a life of crime, since many of them were involved in criminal activities.

“Many in our communities are struggling with drugs, theft, peer pressure or are involved with child trafficking. We want youth to volunteer to do something to change this in the community,” added Segoa.

The voluntary, unpaid, part-time positions will involve becoming a youth ambassador in the Sandton community, encouraging other youth to look after themselves and be aware of the dangers of becoming involved in criminal activities.

“The youth desk will educate their peers and visit at-risk communities and schools in the area.”

Any youth between the ages of 18 and 35 are encouraged to apply.

Spokesperson for the Sandton Police Station Captain Bheki Xulu explained, “The initiative is for young people to help the community in preventing and fighting crime by creating campaigns and crime awareness to the youth at risk.’

Sandton police will provide relevant training to successful candidates.

Applications are open at the Social Crime Prevention section at the Sandton Police Station (room 229) from Monday to Friday between 8am and 3pm.
