Sandton Licensing Department fully operation following protest

MARLBORO – The Marlboro Driving Schools Association alleges that the system has had a number of negative impacts on the driving schools.

Sandton Licensing Department is fully operational following protest action this morning (25 February).

Members of the Marlboro Driving Schools Association in Alexandra staged a protest outside of the licensing centre alleging that the Minister of Transport’slack of seriousness’ and the online booking system has had some damaging effects on the driving schools.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Xolani Fihla has confirmed that the roads were now clear and the protesters have dispersed.

“All those who missed their bookings today will be accommodated on Friday [26 February] and Monday [1 March],” said Fihla.

In a statement issued by the spokesperson of the association, Mmereki Legodi prior to the protest, the association stated that it aimed to put the brakes’ on the department’s online booking system, the National Traffic Information System (NaTIS), which they say continuously crashes when independent driving schools and their customers try to use it.

The protest was a prelude to the industrial action which was set to take place across the country by the National Driving School Association of South Africa on 26 February.
