Giving back to the community through food

WENDYWOOD – Local NPO WATFF has supplied over 400 food hampers to families in Alexandra this year.

Local non-profit organisation Women at The Threshing Floor (WATTF) is still playing their part amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Based in Wendywood in Sandton, it was founded by Nqobile Rachel Ncube and consists of a group of women who all grew up in Alexandra township and now want to give back.

Making a difference in society and their communities, the organisation started the ‘adopt a child or elder’ initiative. This year the organisation adopted 41 child-headed households in Alexandra and has provided them with food hampers and support throughout the pandemic.

“It begins with a wisdom, faith and God to bring practical solutions to spiritual and social ills to affect change within our communities,” she added.

Having a great track record as an open-minded and prolific communicator, she has established herself as a public speaker, philanthropist and a counsellor to women and married couples. She also mentors a group of young and old women.

Since its inception in 2007, the organisation has rebirthed hope and comfort to the destitute, from senior citizens, widows, the disabled, the orphaned and street children totalling 196 people. The focus is to empower women and uplift children.
The organisation has inspired men and women from all walks of life, and they too have stepped up to make a difference in society.

“The WATTF ladies and its partners fund these projects from their personal capacity without any government or other organisational sponsorships or partnership. We do this because we believe that change begins with one person at a time and one step at a time. One can make a difference from where they are and do not need to wait for the government to do it.”

Ncube added that even in these difficult times, the organisation had provided more than 490 grocery hampers to the families from January this year to 5 December.
She added that the work, however, didn’t stop here, her 2021 plans were even bigger.
