Safety tips during rising summer temperatures

JOHANNESBURG – Keeping safe during heat waves is imperative with the weather shifting more towards summer temperatures.

Heat waves are prolonged periods of unusually high temperatures in an area.

Heat waves can negatively effect one’s body should one not exercise enough care, with young children, people who are sick, and the elderly being the most vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

Here are some ways in which one can be prepared for heat waves:.

  • Keeping hydrated is key. The heat causes the body to sweat more, meaning more vital fluids are lost. Keeping a water bottle close by can help you avoid dehydration.
  • When outdoors, it is important to make sure you stay out of direct sunlight as much as you can. Having sunscreen on, wearing a hat or carrying an umbrella will help a long way.
  • Loose-fitting, lightweight, light coloured clothing is beneficial during a heat wave as darker and heavier clothes trap in more heat.
  • Avoiding alcohol, sugary drinks, coffee, energy drinks and anything similar is a plus since these drinks can dehydrate you.
  • If you can, it would be best to avoid any strenuous activity and exercise especially during the hotter times of the day. Stay indoors and take it easy.
  • Never leave your children or pets in a hot car alone. Keep your pets in a space where there will be enough cool space and lots of water
  • If you or anyone experiences heat-related issues such as dizziness, fainting, diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, muscle cramps or rapid heartbeat, seek medical assistance as soon as possible.
