Williams highlights the positive response of residents to those most poorly affected by Covid-19

Williams said that problems persistently plaguing the suburbs include displaced people, the poor state of the roads and a host of water supply issues.

Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams highlighted the positive response of Ward 90 residents to assist the poor and struggling members of the community during the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Community spirit was also evident in the cheering, clapping and music each evening in appreciation of medics and security personnel on duty. Overall Ward 90 residents adhered to the regulations, even when some of these seemed onerous.”
He was pleased to see the start of two capital infrastructure projects in the ward this year including water pipe upgrades in the suburbs of Hyde Park and Parkmore.

“Given the state of the City’s finances, and the number of projects which have been shelved, I am grateful that we managed to secure these pipe replacements.”

Williams said that problems persistently plaguing the suburbs include displaced people, the poor state of the roads and a host of water supply issues.

Williams said that while residents organised and contributed to provide arrangements to help feed and clothe displaced persons, only one private shelter was opened in the ward during Level 5 at Rosebank Union Church.

“Covid-19 affected service delivery across all entities, including the Johannesburg Roads Agency, Pikitup, Joburg Water and City Power. Depots closed, opened and then closed again because of Covid-19 infections. I salute all who worked so hard in the field, under dangerous conditions.”

Battling the war on potholes has been a particular challenge with the JRA working with one-third of their staff.

“Ratepayers have every right to complain when service is not up to standard. We also note realities. The country is not immune. Revenues are down. Service levels have also been affected by poor management, including a string of bad contractual arrangements.

“As councillors, we continually strive to ensure the best service for residents. The above factors are not excuses, even if they provide some understanding of why the service in the City is not world class.”

Williams encourages residents to take care during the festive season.

“Look after yourselves and your families. Covid-19 is not taking a holiday break. Avoid the super-spreader events. Better safe than sorry.”
