The Randburg Police Station is warning members of the public about fraudsters who are calling victims pretending to be their cell phone service provider.
Station spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja said that the alleged fraudsters’ modus operandi is to call the victims and informed them that someone is trying to do ‘SIM swap’ on their number.
A SIM swap is when someone convinces your cell phone service provider to switch your phone number over to a SIM card they own.
“Victims are then requested to furnish more information to stop the alleged swap. Unsuspectedly, you give out information, allowing the fraudsters to gain access to all your personal information and your money stolen from the bank,” said Maja.
After a few reported incidents at the Randburg Police Station, the police are warning the community not to fall into such traps.
“Do not give away your information through your phone or any other manner. Handing over your personal information will only compromise your safety and/or your belongings,” concluded Maja.
