Rotary Morningside provides support to outreach centre

The feeding programme now provides 8 000 meals each month at a cost of R2.25 per meal.

The Rotary Club of Morningside has stepped up for the community during lockdown.

In collaboration with the Early Care Foundation, the Rotary Club launched the Sechaba Support Project to help raise funds to support a feeding programme by the Diepsloot Oratile Centre (DOC), an early childhood development centre.

The idea for the project began when Abram Akgari, principle of the Diepsloot Oratile Centre and chairman of the Early Childhood Development Forum, spent the last R1 200 of his personal savings to buy food and prepare meals for educators in his area who were no longer earning an income as a result of the national lockdown.  “The need grew and Abram, through his ingenuity and hard work, was able to raise funds to feed 400 people from Monday to Friday and provide support to 90 educators and their families,” said Rotary president Terry Mackey.

Akgari added that the feeding scheme has grown exponentially over such a short period of time. The feeding programme now provides 8 000 meals each month at a cost of R2.25 per meal.

“We always have loaves of bread on the side to ensure that when cooked food gets finished, we can give them sandwiches. So far, no one came hungry and went back still hungry, yet the number keeps on increasing,” he said. The Morningside Rotary Club aims to raise R300 000 for the project.
