Mbalula inspects adherence to regulations at OR Tambo International Airport

The airport has put a number of measures in place to prioritise the safety of its passengers and staff, including the provision of vending machines for personal protective equipment.

Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula is confident that the aviation sector will adhere to the Covid-19 regulations.

As the sector prepares to reopen for limited domestic travel, Mbalula visited OR Tambo International Airport today (3 June) to observe the airport’s adherence to lockdown regulations.

Mbalula last week outlined the regulations under which airlines may resume operations during alert level 3.

“As the country moves to level 3, and more industries resume operations, the transport sector must be responsive to enable mobility of both workers and learners,” Mbalula said.

“I am confident that our airports will play a central role in reigniting the economy and reconnecting our economic hubs, while strictly operating under these conditions,” said the minister.

The airport has put a number of measures in place to prioritise the safety of its passengers and staff.

Some of these measures include, but are not limited to, the provision of vending machines for personal protective equipment (PPE), the self-scanning of boarding passes, staggered boarding times and the regular disinfecting of aircraft cabins.

“I am satisfied that the airport has started out well and we expect this to continue. Now that we have begun opening up aviation, we must look ahead with determination in order for the transport sector to perform its vital economic role,” added Mbalula.
