Rays of Hope launches Phase 2 of #Hope4Alex

The Rays of Hope Foundation continues to reach new heights in its venture to feed the community of Alexandra.

The Rays of Hope Foundation continues to reach new heights in its venture to feed the community of Alexandra.

With an initial target set at 1 000, the foundation’s initiative #Hope4Alex has fed over 46 000 vulnerable people to date (27 May) since the national lockdown began. According to CEO Sihle Mooi, as the foundation expanded its reach into the community, it became more aware of the other challenges.”We are starting phase two of #Hope4Alex which is designed to provide more holistic services to the most vulnerable in the community through the 30 local organisations that make up #Hope4Alex,” he said.

Mooi added the aim of the second phase was to support the most vulnerable individuals over the next three to six months, as the foundation transitions back to its usual programming.

The foundation has identified five key areas of need in the Alexandra community:

  • Food, hygiene and fabric masks
  • Mental and spiritual health services
  • #WarmUpAlex: winter-wear and blankets
  • Screening and testing

Services to schoolchildren Mooi added the foundation has also had discussions with partners to address factors such as internet connectivity for learners and small businesses and the employment of breadwinners and youth.

“Sandton City Mall for example has already employed 20 youth from vulnerable families to sanitise customers. We want to multiply such opportunities,” he concluded.
