Being in matric during lockdown and adjusting to the changes

MORNINGSIDE – Matric life is not easy, with lockdown it gets a little more difficult as learners have to adjust to online learning.

School learners are faced with a lot of changes during this lockdown especially those in matric. They have had to adjust to online learning and need to keep up with the syllabus.

Two siblings who live in Morningside in matric Cameron and Jaden Solarsh study together and help each other where they can. They both go to King David High School Victory Park.

They both excel and have downfalls in different subjects but having each other during this time is helpful to them.

“I’m a prefect (head of arts and culture) at my school. Matric has been really tough, there’s a fortune of work involved. It got off to a really great and busy start,” said Cameron.

Many things have been placed on hold but studying from home continues, with help from teachers to make online learning much easier for learners.

“Online learning has not been easy as it is very difficult to concentrate when you have a lot of distractions around you. However, I do feel that I have sustained myself and I’m working well,” said Jaden.

There are many challenges that come with online learning such as bad network connectivity that may interrupt lessons. However, many have also seen the positive side of studying from home.

“Lockdown has taught me to be responsible and has given me the independence that I will need in life after school because it’s up to me to do the work and if I don’t, it’s my own fault,” added Cameron.

The school provided the learners with a block-teaching timetable which tells them what lessons they have and at what time, all in 90-minute intervals, and includes breaks too as it is important to take breaks and balance school and home life.

Jaden said that he plays golf in his back yard garden when he has free time in order to catch a breath and relax. He explained that spending time with family and still being able to do what you love is essential in balancing your life during this lockdown.

“Don’t procrastinate. Find ways to stay motivated. Never leave anything to the last minute. Bribe yourself into doing work. Also, balance your social life and schoolwork,” concluded Cameron.
