A message from Dr Farouk Mohamed

KELVIN – Kelvin's neighbourhood doctor weighs in on the coronavirus.

The residents of Kelvin in Sandton are a close-knit community with love for their neighbours, and Dr Farouk Mohamed is the friendly neighbourhood doctor.

He has been a resident of the suburb for 31 years and has been named a pillar of the community.

Mohamed weighed in on the current Covid-19 crisis, “Take care of yourself first because the virus is here now. There is only one way to stop it, non-communication, cleaning and washing your hands, wearing a mask if you can and stay away from everybody,”

He also urged all South Africans to stay home for as long as possible. “That is the only way the virus will go. If one person with the virus mixes with 100 people, they most probably will get the virus. That is how it spreads wildly. So we have to keep it under control. With the support of corporates and government bodies, we must do our part to make things right and stay home.”

Mohamed took up residence in 1989 and was one of the first non-white residents at the time. He said that during the apartheid era it was very difficult to get a home in the area. “Fortunately we managed to get a house in the suburb of Kelvin. And so in 1989, we moved here.”

He established two practices in the area in 1992 – one in Kelvin and one in Buccleuch. “For over 20 years we have been in business and everyone came to know us because we provided a very good service. The community is very supportive of us.”

He mentioned Kelvin’s peace and tranquility and plans on staying in the area for a long time. “The neighbours are great, we communicate regularly and I’m very comfortable here.”

Take your neighbourhood doctor’s advice and stay home, stay safe.
