Shopping centres take precaution

SANDTON – Diversified real estate company Redefine Properties has taken precautions to ensure the safety of its shoppers

Redefine Properties, owners of Benmore Centre and Bryanston Shopping Centre, are set to introduce stricter cleaning and disinfecting protocols at all of its retail properties.

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange-listed diversified real estate investment trust has adopted additional protocols as part of a broad approach to preventing the transmission of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

“The sector came into focus as the President called on all industry players to bolster hygiene at retail establishments following Cabinet’s decision to introduce wide-ranging curbs to mitigate the risks posed by the virus,” said Scott Thorburn, inland general manager of Redefine Properties.

As part of its plan, the property company has increased the frequency at which it cleans its facilities in addition to providing hand sanitizers at strategic points within the common areas of the malls.

“Our efforts are guided by the local health authorities and best practices. The health and safety of our customers, tenants and employees remain our highest priority,” added Thorburn.

He added that the company has continued to monitor the developments surrounding the pandemic and communicated with the relevant centre managers across its retail portfolio.

“All our managers are empowered to make decisions necessary to best ensure the safety of everyone in the community,” he said.

Shoppers are recommended to:

  • Wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Contact the clinic if you have symptoms; fever and a dry cough are most common.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Do not travel if you have a fever and cough.
