When passion and animals meet

KELVIN – Local animal lover, Lyrie-Lynnette loves the work she does for animals.

A local from the quaint suburb of Kelvin has a passion for all things furry, which has awarded her the name ‘The Animal Rescue Lady’ from the loving residents.

Lirie-Lynnette Meintjes would like to hold a family day for Kelvin residents where they can bring all their pets to mix, mingle and play, “I feel I have a deep passion for wanting to help. My birthday is coming up in April, so I would like to do something with the whole community.”

She also wants to use the day to talk about and create more awareness around animal abuse. “At the moment, I am known as the rescue lady in Kelvin. My main thing is to rescue and help these animals. There are a lot of sad times but the happy times are so rewarding.”

Her current project is the TNR campaign which aims to trap, neuter and release feral cats. “The kitties are always going into the drains, especially when they’re about to give birth. I would really like to put up small hideouts for all the feral cats in the area, I’ve already got the support from some of the residents. Now I just awaiting permission from the council.”

She assists where she can, and simply does what comes naturally to her. Meintjes’ journey started when a little puppy showed up at her gate. “I am not allowed to keep animals on my property due to the rules set out by my landlord. We started looking for the owners sending out notices and nobody came. After speaking to my landlord, he said I can keep it for a night or two. I put my number up everywhere in Kelvin and the owner never came forward. That doggie is now ours, we love Rosie.”

At the moment, without a permanent income, Meintjes wants to showcase her passion and strength by taking part in the Sandton SPCA Kilimanjaro Challenge. She is looking for sponsorship for gear for the challenge, among other things. If you are able to assist, send an email to liriemeintjes@gmail.com
