Herman Mashaba addresses media over Lily Mine disaster in Rosebank

ROSEBANK – Mashaba has committed himself through his newly founded organisation, The People's Dialogue, that he would assist the community and affected families with legal representation to help retrieve the remains of the workers.

Former executive mayor of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba has met with community representatives, the families and former colleagues of three miners who lost their lives in the 2016 Lily Mine disaster. The joint press conference took place at 54 on Bath Hotel in Rosebank on 22 January.

Mashaba accepted an invitation to visit the families and former colleagues of the three miners, Pretty Nkambule, Solomon Nyarenda and Yvonne Mnisi, whose remains are still trapped in an underground container four years after the mine collapsed. Mashaba promised to provide the families with the best legal representation to bring them justice.

Harry Mazibuko, a former chief safety employee at the mine, said he approached Mashaba for help after government and management failed to pave a way forward to get bodies of trapped mineworkers out of the mine.

Maziubko added that today marks 272 days since community members started camping at the mine demanding for the retrieval of the bodies of trapped miners. He says during that time they have endured abuse and victimisation.
