Five Cubs of 1st Bryanston Scout Group are honoured with prestigious badges

BRYANSTON – The Cubs were awarded Leaping Wolf badges which require dedication and commitment.

Five Cubs of the 1st Bryanston Scout Group were recently presented with their Leaping Wolf badges.

Enzo Ludwig, Jordan Wigg, Mia Simon and Tristan Rigden of the Saturday Cub Pack were the proud recipients of this special honour. Ava Schorn of the Friday Cub Pack was also presented with her badge earlier this month. The Leaping Wolf is the highest award a Cub can earn and must be completed before their 11th birthday when they move up to the Scout Troop.

The Saturday Pack which was only started in April 2016, in response to the growing number of children wanting to get involved, has only awarded three Leaping Wolf badges since its inception. So, to have four children from the pack complete the requirements for this award in the same month is a unique and special achievement.

Silvia Ludwig, the leader of the Saturday Pack, who encouraged the children to work towards earning the badge said, “To earn a Leaping Wolf takes a significant amount of effort and personal commitment.”

She added that this was something that the child worked towards independently of the structured Cub programme provided during weekly meetings, and this started to develop basic planning and leadership skills. “It has been a real privilege for me to watch them learn and grow as individuals through the experience.”

To earn this prestigious award, the children had to complete several special tasks and projects. These included a community greening project, as well as finding out about a topical global issue and what they could do at home about it. They also learned about different technologies and had to do a short presentation on the benefits to the other children in the Cub pack. Each child also had to choose a special personal challenge, which they worked on over several months, to finally complete their badge.

Marisa Rakic, the leader of the Friday Pack said, “It is interesting to see the different projects selected by each child according to their talents and interests, and the effort they put into completing them. For example, Ava created posters with little seed packets, which were distributed to impoverished communities to encourage people to grow vegetables for themselves.

“What makes Ava’s achievement special is that she only joined the pack a little more than a year ago, so didn’t have much time to complete her Leaping Wolf before her 11th birthday.”
