SPAR Proteas appoint a local coach
SANDTON – South Africa Netball has appointed a new local coach to take the team forward following Norma Plummer's departure.
Dorette Badenhorst was recently appointed coach of the SPAR Proteas netball team at an announcement at Holiday Inn Sandton.
Netball South Africa president Cecilia Molokwane also revealed that Dumisane Chauke will serve as an assistant to Badenhorst.
This comes after Norma Plummer’s departure following the 2019 Vitality Netball World Cup, where the team finished fourth at the global showpiece.
Badenhorst’s first task will be on home soil as the team will compete in the 2019 Africa Netball Cup in Cape Town in October.
Badenhorst is no stranger to the SPAR Proteas setup as she was part of the management team at the World Cup in Liverpool. Chauke has also been in the national team ranks as an assistant coach in the U21 Proteas team.
Bongiwe Msomi will continue to lead the side as the team’s captain partnered by Karla Pretorius.
Molokwane strongly backed the coach stating that Badenhorst would be given enough time to settle in as coach and a mentor to the players. “There is no mandate for the coach at the moment, there is no pressure on the coach, and both of them have our full support,” she said.
Badenhorst assured the nation that she would not make a lot of changes to the squad that played under Plummer.
“We’ll just build on what Norma did for our country, we shouldn’t go backwards but we need to go forward and make sure we become better and better,” she said.
“Thank you to Netball South Africa for believing in me and for giving me the opportunity to contribute and make a difference in each player’s life. I look forward to working together with my team to make South Africa proud of the SPAR Proteas and continue to be a reckoned team in world netball.”
