Burst fire hydrant turned into a car wash

SANDTON – A leaking fire hydrant in Sandton turned into an impromptu car wash by passing motorists.

Update, 27 September, 1.30pm

Johannesburg Water confirmed to Sandton Chronicle that the fire hydrant that become an instant car wash in Wierda Valley was in fact opened by their team to fix a burst pipe in the area, Joburg Water external communications officer Eleanor Mavimbela said, “They were flushing the system in order to do repairs.”

Initial report, 27 September, 11.15am

Passing motorists saw the opportunity for a free car wash in Wierda Valley on 26 September when a fire hydrant on the sidewalk began gushing high-pressure water onto the road.

An employee from a neighbouring building caught the action on camera and posted it on Twitter. The video of the wash-and-go went viral as a number of motorists could be seen strategically aligning their vehicles in front of the impromptu water fountain.

From a taxi to a Mercedes-Benz, the pressured water did not discriminate. A number of motorists even turned back to make sure all angles were covered.

Only Sandtonities can turn a bad situation into something that brings some good.
