Marlboro Gardens Secondary receives R50 000 donation from community organisation

MARLBORO – The Ashraful Aid humanitarian organisation collected donations from the community to contribute to the school.

A humanitarian organisation based in Marlboro Gardens handed over a R50 000 donation to the Marlboro Gardens Secondary School.

Ashraful Aid was started in 1995 and provides humanitarian aid and relief in South Africa and internationally. Suhail Wadee, one of the members of the organisation, said that their goal is to provide aid wherever it is needed.

Wadee explained that in the past few years they have really worked to accelerate the work that they do and help as many people as possible. As they are based in the same community as the school, he said that they feel it’s important to support those in the community. He added that he attended the school as a youngster and knows that many of the children are from underprivileged households.

“We have a lot of support from the community, they see our work and they know it goes to a good cause,” said Wadee.

Principal Avril van Zyl said that the generous donation to the school would help make a difference at the school. He said that about 30 per cent of the learners at the school are unable to pay their fees but he says that every cent that is received is spent wisely to ensure that the learners get the best possible education.

Van Zyl added that the school runs a feeding scheme for the learners by providing them porridge in the morning and a sandwich during the lunch break. “A group of our learners, who as a part of our social responsibility, help serve the learners food.”

Former learners are also encouraged to donate their school uniforms to provide for younger learners who cannot afford new uniforms.

Wadee added that people can see the impact that the projects have on the ground and they relish creating partnerships like this to help their community.

“South Africa is in a really difficult time if you look at our unemployment and our social challenge, there are child-headed households and its those things that motivate us to try to make a difference in their lives,” concluded Wadee.
