Sandton SPCA encourages support for Mandela Day activities

SANDTON – The Sandton SPCA is looking for assistance on a range of projects this Mandela Day.

The Sandton SPCA hopes to encourage community members to participate in their annual Mandela Day celebrations on 18 July.

The SPCA has a long list of activities that volunteers can get involved in which will assist them in keeping their animals cared for and their facilities well maintained.

Wilna Lamb, the education officer at the SPCA, explained that they have created five different time slots throughout the day with a range of activities which include assisting with the animals, painting and fixing kennels and cleaning.

They also have a wish list which they hope people will be able to contribute to. The list includes cat litter, animal food, paint and paintbrushes, cleaning materials, blankets and dog jackets.

Lamb explained that while they have a range of activities taking place on Mandela Day, they have a sterilisation campaign which they will be hosting throughout the month. “As part of the 67 minutes – Mandela Day Campaign, Sandton SPCA spent the morning in Alexandra kicking off a sterilisation drive. We arrived bright and early to be greeted by a crowd of Alex residents and their much-loved dogs and one cat.”

She added that many owners were interested in only having their animals vaccinated rather sterilised.

“In these cases, our inspectors engaged with the owners and educated them as to the many benefits of sterilisation. We are pleased to say that many changed their minds and registered their pets for sterilisation.”

Many puppies were dewormed on-site. In total, one cat and 29 dogs were transported back to the Sandton SPCA clinic for their sterilisation procedures before being returned to their owners.

Lamb added that the sterilisation campaign had been generously sponsored by Arco 360, however, they have a number of other large projects which they hope to get sponsors for.

Some of the larger projects include a revamp of the grooming room and feeding room as well as new roofing in their covered areas.
