Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation shares the Inside Scoop

SANDTON – The foundation shared the work that it is doing to combat youth unemployment in the country.

The Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation hosted a discussion in Sandton called the Inside Scoop to highlight the role that non-profit organisations can play in combating youth unemployment.

The foundation has many projects including the Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust, the Adopt-A-School Foundation and the Black Umbrellas. As a whole, two of the foundation’s key goals are to improve education and entrepreneurship.

Mmabatho Maboyo, the CEO of the foundation, said that one of their main goals when it comes to incubating businesses is to ensure that they are businesses which will go on to employ more people.

She discussed whether public benefit organisations play a role in education and entrepreneurship when these are areas that are meant to be funded by the government.

“What has historically been found is that these organisations emerge when there is a social imbalance where governments are needing to deal with chronic social issues such as poverty and unemployment or are slow to do so.”

Seapei Mafoyane, the CEO of Black Umbrellas, said they hope to incubate businesses which will be sustainable and can go back to their communities and show them how to create their own sustainable businesses.

Mafoyane said they have seen some incredible growth from the businesses they incubate. This year, they were awarded the Incubator Programme of the Year by the International Business Innovation Association. She highlighted that a large part of their job is to help businesses breach the gap between small businesses and corporates.

“On average, an SME will create one job in the lifetime of their business… when we look at other developing nations like Chile and Malaysia their entrepreneurs create on average three jobs. Ten years ago the Black Umbrellas set out the mandate to exceed the national average. We set the target of creating four jobs at an SME in the lifetime of their business.”

The three-year incubation programme aims to help ensure that the businesses are able to generate living salaries for each of their employees and create wealth within the business.
