Metro police release April performance statistics

JOHANNESBURG – JMPD’s April performance statistics reinforce our commitment towards a safer Joburg.

Metro police released their April performance statistics on 21 May.

Metro police chief David Tembe announced that additional officers would be deployed in the inner-city to help the newly launched CCTV Reaction Unit to fight crime. The addition of 40 officers will bring the number to 120.

Tembe together with Joburg mayor Herman Mashaba and MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun honoured seven officers for their excellent work in arresting suspects during a patrol. One of the suspects was wanted for attempted murder, and cash in transit and hijacking incidents.

The City continues to battle with a land invasion problem and 110 land invaders were removed across the city by Metro police officers.

Tembe revealed that 22 suspects were arrested for being in possession of stolen/hijacked vehicles, two for fraud and 12 for unlicensed firearms. He said drinking under the influence of alcohol continued to rise.

Mashaba thanked the officers for ensuring that Joburg residents were safe.

“I wish to also thank our officers working beyond the call of duty. Your efforts do not go unnoticed. It is because of you that we are able to serve our residents with pride,” said Mashaba.

“As a City, we will continue to do all that is within our power to ensure that we create safe and connected communities throughout Johannesburg.”
