Robbers act as guests at a local guest house

MORNINGSIDE – Break-in gives room to fear for a business owner of B&B.


A robbery took place at a bed and breakfast in Morningside on 11 May.

Captain Granville Meyer, the spokesperson for Sandton Police Station, said that a business break-in was a reported.

According to Meyer, “The victim was accosted by three suspects who pretended to be guests at the guest house. They threatened the receptionist with a firearm. It was reported that six televisions to the value of R 35 000 were stolen on the day.”

It is alleged that the robbery took place at the at a bed-and-breakfast owned by the secretary general of the South African Federation of Trade Unions Zwelinzima Vavi. He said in a Facebook post,

“I received a call from my wife on Friday evening telling me that the criminals have invaded [the business].”

Zwelinzima and his bodyguard were driving back to Johannesburg from a meeting in Pretoria when his wife Noluthando called. He said, “In a panic, I didn’t ask questions as I assumed she was at home.”

According to Vavi’s post, he and his bodyguard drove straight home, racing to get there, only to find out that his wife was calling from her business offices.

“Items that were stolen from the incident were televisions, refrigerators, cellphone, guest clothes, and laptops. Everyone was tied up including two of the B&B’s security guards who were also beaten up.”

Vavi said that throughout the ordeal these guys kept on demanding where his wife was and where her car keys were. She came across one of the intruders in the passage and was not aware of what was happening as she had been praying in her office. “She ran back to her office locked herself in and called all of us for help. That’s when these guys panicked and took everything already in an Audi and a minibus and drove off.”

He added in his Facebook post, “We all live in fear and we are all prisoners. That’s our country 25 years into its democracy.”
