Polo perfect

INANDA – South Africa wins the first official Test polo match held between SA and Argentina in years.

 


Everything polo, tango, cuisine, and fashion ensured there was never a dull moment at the Aon Inanda International Polo event.

It was the first official Test match between South Africa and Argentina in years and the event was one to remember.

The match was preceded by a development team contest between the countries as a curtain raiser.

Then there was tango dancing by talented dancers, while members of the public watched on while enjoying excellent food accompanied by Argentinean wine.

As with every event at Inanda Club, community members took the opportunity to dress with flair and watched the Test match with much interest.

While South Africa went on to win the game, Argentina ambassador Alberto D’Alotto said events such as this one strengthened the link between the two countries.

“Sport gives us [the countries] a way of knowing each other, and making Argentina known in other countries,” he said. “I would have liked to see Argentina win but it is a social game for the friendship, winning or losing is not important.”

Inanda Club’s general manager, Paul Oosthuizen, and polo manager, Craig James, said the first international polo tournament at Inanda was held in 1936.

“For many years the Inanda Club has encouraged talented historically disadvantaged polo players to develop their talents and to benefit from participation in high-profile tournaments,” they said in a joint statement.

“The development player curtain raiser today and the Development Cup tournament later this year play an important part in bringing the sport to a wider audience.”
