St Stithians community rallies behind victims of Cyclone Idai

LYME PARK – In just one week, the parents and learners helped collect essential items to fill a 40-foot truck.

The St Stithians community rallied together to assist those who have been affected by Cyclone Idai which hit Mozambique on 4 March.

St Stithians learners and parents were encouraged to donate blankets, crockery and cutlery, children’s and adults clothing and staple food items. Those living in the city of Beira were particularly hard hit and faced incredible infrastructure damage. However, in the past month, there has been some improvement to the road to Beira which allows for trucks carrying donations to make their way to the city.

The fundraising initiative was started by a parent, Godelieve Schuurmans who was inspired by many other people who had begun fundraising initiatives to help those affected by the disaster. Schuurmans helped secure a 40-foot truck to transport the donations which were sponsored by Bolloré Logistics.

In just a week, the school helped collect so many items that a trailer had to be hitched to the truck for everything to fit.

Annie Fyfe-Hitchings, the media, PR and communication manager for the school said, “What is amazing is that our community includes so many generous individuals and that some of them represent corporates that have also assisted us in contributing towards our efforts. Tupperware very generously donated 800 lunch boxes, we received two pallets of water purifying sachets from Rotary District 9400 which will purify 1.2 million litres of water and tons of non-perishable food items and clothing and bedding and home goods from all of the individual donations from our community of belonging.”
