Bryanston Sports Club takes it all in thrilling final match of the bowls season

BRYANSTON – Belgravia takes on Bryanston Sports Club in must-win match.

It was won by the skin of their teeth but ultimate glory belonged to Bryanston Sports Club when they defeated Belgravia Bowling Club in the final match of the league season.

Clear skies greeted bowlers at Bryanston when the teams met for the decider of the Men’s Club League on 16 March. This is the top division of Johannesburg Bowls Association leagues, and Belgravia had led the league with 159 points.

Bryanston was second on 154 points. Over the 18 games that were played between the sides, which translated to points on the log table, it was evident that it would go down to the wire.

A 12–6 win for Bryanston on the day ultimately gave them a league win by only one point (166 points vs Belgravia’s 165).

“The league is highly competitive and the teams are very strong,” said chairperson of bowls at Bryanston, Ian McKenzie. “The guys pulled together and played well on the last day.”

Three teams of four players each represented Bryanston during the Men’s Club League. McKenzie credited the club’s selectors for ensuring the best players played and they were ‘compatible’ in their teams.

“The players themselves put in a lot of time and effort in practise to do well.”

Bryanston’s three women’s teams also held their own in their Club League but were only able to finish in the middle of the table. The club’s mixed team, called the Mavericks, won their division.

“We also have a men’s team called Bryanston Allstars, who play in the Super 8 League. They also had a shot at winning their division on the last day but they were unable to.”

McKenzie said players will now play in district, national and club tournaments before the new league season kicks off in October.
