Former Bryanston sports coach sexual assault case postponed

BRYANSTON – The man facing sexual assault charges will reappear in court in April.

A former sports coach at Bryanston High School appeared briefly in the Alexandra Magistrates Court on 12 March where his case was postponed to resume on 15 April.

The 33-year-old man was arrested earlier this year for allegedly sexually abusing learners at the school. One of the learners laid criminal charges against the coach.

In a disciplinary panel, the school found that the man was guilty of charges of sexual harassment and financial mismanagement and the coach was fired from his position.

In a statement released by the Department of Education, it said that the man would be struck off the professional role of educators.

“We welcome this sanction and urge educators to refrain from all types of misconduct as they should lead by example to ensure that learners mirror their conduct in creating a safe schooling environment, conducive for effective teaching and learning”, said MEC Panyaza Lesufi.

The department encourages learners never to listen to anybody who tells them not to tell, for fear of victimisation. Learners must report such incidents to their parents, police or any other trusted figure of authority. The student governing body at the school also commended the learners for testifying against the man.
