JSE rings the bell to celebrate International Women’s Day

SANDTON – Dozens of women gathered at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange to raise awareness about female empowerment and gender equality.

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange in Sandton hosted its annual Ring the Bell event to raise awareness about women’s empowerment and gender equality on International Women’s Day.

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange joined over 40 stock exchanges and financial institutions from around the world to ring the bell. Women in ETFs, the Motsepe Foundation, Rand Mutual Bank, and the United Nations Women and Global Compact hosted the ceremony to bring to light the transformation that still needs to take place.

Women from various organisations and businesses used the opportunity to highlight key focuses on gender equality and the accomplishments they’ve achieved and how they work towards empowering women.

Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe, from the Motsepe Foundation, highlighted that around the world women still face inequality. Moloi-Motsepe said that there has been a focus on getting young girls involved in the science and technology fields as these are fields which have typically been skewed more toward men.

“We have to encourage brave young women and men who are speaking out and drawing attention to the unequal power dynamics in our homes, our businesses and politics… what I ask of men and women in leadership is to break down these barriers that hold women back,” said Motsepe-Moloi.

Lynette Ntuli, an accomplished businesswoman, shared that in many countries, women are still prevented from doing certain tasks, including signing a contract or leaving the country. She highlighted the importance of women using their voices and privileges and extend them to those who might not have them.

“Business and enterprise is perhaps our most meaningful tool to change the world. By changing the world, sometimes our worlds are as small as securing independence for just ourselves. Sometimes it means securing a future for our families if we can start with one family, one community, one city at a time through women, who make up more than half the world’s active economic force, imagine where the world would be today,” concluded Ntuli.
