Police awareness campaign in Woodmead

SANDTON – Role players from different areas recently held a parade at Woodmead Retail Park.

 

Various role players across the region recently held an on-duty parade for Operation Buya Mthetho in Woodmead Retail Park.

Operation Buya Mthetho is a multidisciplinary integrated strategic and operational plan that seeks to cut the surge in lawlessness, restore safety and win back the public confidence

The parade started at 9.30am when various role players including Sandton Vispol and Detectives, Johannesburg North Cluster Vispol and Detectives, Johannesburg K9, Johannesburg Flying Squad, Crime intelligence, Johannesburg Metro Police Department Region E, Savika Security, Ares Protection, ARN Security, Region E law enforcement, City Power and community patrollers from Alexandra lined up for the operation.

According to Brigadier Egen Moodley, station commander at the Sandton Police Station, the purpose of the operation is a multidisciplinary high visibility crime prevention and crime detection operation that will focus on specific crime hotspot suburbs in Sandton.

Moodley said the detectives are not on the parade and started their suspect tracing operations earlier today. “We are focusing on armed robberies [including the Trio crimes], common robberies and property crimes in the area.”

During the operation a total of 164 people were searched, 93 vehicles were searched, 14 ATMs were visited, 10 malls were visited, four garages were visited and seven were banks visited.

Police also recovered 25 quarters of cocaine, eight half mandrax tablets, 27 packets of crystal meth, 22 x rocks, 36 bags of dagga, 15 mandrax tablets, 56,36g dagga and a toy firearm. In addition, there were several successes, including 34 arrests.

Vispol in Alexandra:

  • 2 suspects caught dealing in drugs.

Vispol in Bramley:

  • 1 arrest for malicious injury to property
  • 1 arrest for theft
  • 1 arrest dealing in dagga
  • 1 arrest assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Vispol in Sandton:

  • 3 arrests for theft of cellphones
  • 1 arrest for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm,

Vispol Midrand:

  • 1 arrest for pointing of a firearm.

Vispol in Sandringham:

  • 1 arrest for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The detectives made 22 arrests for various offences such as assault, fraud, rape, theft and common robbery.

“No serious and violent crimes were reported within Sandton Policing area,” Moodley ended.
