Massive illegal dumping problem persists on South Road, Morningside

SANDTON – South Road in Morningside has become a hotspot for illegal dumpers.

The illegal dumping spot in Sandton, on South Road in Morningside, is a growing concern that is beginning to get out of hand.

Ward 103 councillor, Vincent Earp has received numerous complaints regarding illegal dumping. Earp said he, together with Region E officials for Urban Management and the regional director recently conducted an inspection tour of the dump site along South Road.

“The dumping along South Road continues unabated and is an eyesore that is seen by foreign visitors and motorists using this road to access the Sandton CBD.”

He said that Pikitup is aware of the dumping issue, but they have illegal dumping all over the region and the city. “We are therefore in a queue waiting for its removal.”

According to Earp, a resident has witnessed a truck loading off the rubble and has information that the truck is disposing rubble from a local building site.

The truck with no number plates that was caught dumping illegally by a resident.

“I have been working with Urban Management at Region E to pressurise Pikitup to prioritise this site. Officials realise that unless they do something to secure the road reserve, illegal dumping will continue,” explained Earp who added that unless heavy fines are imposed and the culprits’ vehicles impounded, people will still struggle to end this scourge of illegal dumping.

One of the problems is that there is no legal city dump site for building rubble in the north of Johannesburg.
