St David’s Marist Inanda celebrates local cricket talent

SANDTON – St David's Marist Inanda hosted a four-day cricket festival to highlight up-and-coming talent.

St David’s Marist Inanda in Sandton hosted the Fasken Time Cricket Festival to highlight up-and-coming cricket talent.

Eight top cricket teams from around the country had the opportunity to compete against one another in two-day matches. Throughout the festival, the spin bowlers’ performances were among the highlights.

The matches aimed to expose the young cricketers to the longer form of the game and a different style of play compared to T20 matches.

This year the festival included Cricket South Africa’s Talent Acceleration Programme team, who enjoyed victories against St Alban’s College and St David’s. Much of the team’s success was due to the spin duo of Neo Felane and Odirile Modimokoane, who took 26 wickets between them.

Neo of Laerskool Birchleigh in Kempton Park took 14 wickets for 107 runs in his team’s two matches and was named best bowler of the festival. Odirile of Hoerskool Grenswag in Rustenburg took 12 wickets for just 53 runs in two matches, including figures of 7/6 against St Alban’s.

Cameron Shekleton (best batsman), Neo Felane (best bowler) and Bryce Parsons (best player) celebrate their success at the Fasken Time Cricket Festival.

Bryce Parsons, a left-arm spinner of King Edward School, was named best player of the festival, scoring 265 runs and taking nine wickets.

St Stithian‘s leg-spinner, Joshua Hoffman, took 14 wickets in one match as his team cruised to victory against Clifton Durban.

Cameron Shekleton of St Stithians scored two centuries in two innings and was named best batsman of the festival for his average of 261. There were also strong batting performances from Heinrigh Pieterse of King Edward School, Jacob Miltz of St David’s as well as Cameron Rowe of St Stithians.

Niels Momberg, the youth manager for Cricket South Africa, encouraged all schools to play more two-day cricket. “The more you play this type of cricket, the more you will grow as a player overall.”
