Robbery victim says ‘nothing gets done’

WOODMEAD – A woman was robbed of her Rolex watch and Louis Vuitton bag. She believes she was followed from a mall in Midrand.

A woman who was robbed by a group of men in Woodmead earlier this year has expressed her disappointment about the lack of leads following the incident.

In April this year, the woman who wished to not be named, said that she was followed from a mall in Midrand while she had her 12-year-old son and his friend in the car. She was dropping her son’s friend off at his home when four armed men in balaclavas got out of a white Ford Fiesta and surrounded her car.

The men immediately demanded she give over her Rolex watch, her car keys and a Louis Vuitton handbag which contained other personal items including her phone.

A security guard at the complex where she dropped her son’s friend off, pushed a panic button and her son managed to take a photograph of the car the suspects were driving before they sped off.

Following the incident, she went back to the mall to see if there was video footage of her being followed from the mall. The footage shows that she was followed by a red Ford Figo and she believes the men then switched cars before following her to Woodmead. “I am yet to hear from their security, those men [could be] back for their next victim and nothing gets done.”

Since then, she hasn’t received any follow-up from the security and believes that incidents of people being followed from malls will continue. She added that a detective from the Sandton Police Station had taken a look at the video footage and managed to trace the license plate to a woman who knew nothing about the incident.

“It took me months to stop jumping out of my skin every time someone came near my car. I never slept for weeks. No one understands the trauma experienced by something like this unless you go through it. It changes your perception of South Africa, security at malls and people.”
