Redhill School excited to host third annual Redfest

MORNINGSIDE – The festival will host both professional and student productions and will include a variety of food stalls and activities.

Inspired by the National Arts Festival, Redhill School aims to provide a similar platform for artists in the heart of Johannesburg.

Redfest, which will take place from 28 to 30 September, provides both seasoned, as well as up-and-coming artists with the platform to perform free of charge.

Joseph Gerassi, the head of the high school, said that Redhill has focused on the arts over the years and the festival will focus on creating an arts community through educating the community and youths. The festival will include drama, music, visual arts and design, as well as various food and drink vendors, entertainment and outdoor activities.

“We’re looking for people in the industry who say: ‘I really want to show off this piece of work but I don’t have the money for it’ and then they can write to Matt Counihan, Redfest director and if he thinks it’s got merit he will invite them to come and use our venue,” said Gerassi, who emphasised that they did not want people to feel limited because they cannot afford a venue but rather give them the opportunity to showcase their talent in a festival environment.

“We really want it to be a space where student theatre ultimately combines with adult theatre so that youngsters who are involved and want to get into the arts get that opportunity to be in the festival.”

The festival is supported by its technical partner, Splitbeam and production partners the International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People.

Redhill hosted its first Redfest two years ago and it has grown significantly since then. In 2016 Redfest hosted 18 performances which grew to over 50 last year. For this year’s festival, they aim to ensure that it will be even bigger and better than before.

Counihan added that this year’s performances will include Choir Boy, Nijinsky’s War, Hani: The Legacy, Black and Redhill’s own major production, Polkadots.
