Raise-a-Champ campaign donates books to young learners through Buccleuch-based book drive

BUCCLEUCH – A Buccleuch resident hopes that her book drive will ensure that young children have access to books.

A Buccleuch resident hopes to teach her young son about paying it forward through her new Raise-a-Champ campaign.

Samantha Moodley was inspired by her five-year-old son Laiton’s love of books and wanted to show him that you don’t need to have a lot of money to help someone else. Moodley has begun a campaign to collect second-hand books to donate to schools where children might not have access to reading materials.

“It’s about being able to help other people and teaching our son to pay it forward,” she said.

“I don’t know where it will end up but if it can put a smile on a few people’s faces it will be worth it.”

Laiton’s school Buccleuch Montessori and Primary has come on board to help Moodley collect the books. She added that her son was so excited to be involved in the project and she hoped that he could carry on with the initiative as he gets older.

“He is such a kind-hearted child. As a family, we decided that we wanted to do this and since then he has been so excited to start collecting books and coming up with ideas to help.”

So far, other schools in the area have also pledged their support to the campaign and Moodley hopes that once parents are aware of the campaign they will be happy to donate more books.

“We want to also get one person from each province to volunteer their services by heading up this campaign in their province like stay-at-home moms etc. In this way, we can help more than just one school.”

Moodley has been overwhelmed by the response so far and hopes that they will be able to collect enough books to donate to numerous schools.
