VIDEO: Deliwe de Lange to continue working for community in spite of being asked to step down

WOODMEAD – Provincial Police Commissioner Deliwe de Lange says she is unaware of the reasons why she was asked to step down.

Provincial Police Commissioner Deliwe de Lange announced at a media briefing in Woodmead that she will continue to serve the community despite taking early retirement.

The police commissioner said that she had not requested early retirement but was rather asked to accept the offer by national police management.

De Lange said that when she questioned why she was being removed from her position she was told that she would be leaving because of a ‘rotation’ that will take place across the country. She was also informed of a succession plan which requires her to move on.

“I asked what this has to do with me because when you talk about a succession plan you talk about someone who is leaving who is supposed to mentor someone.” She added that when she attempted to dig deeper to find out the reasons why she was being made to leave she was given no explanation.

In the past two-and-a-half years that she has been in the position, she has endeavoured to make sure that the police work in partnership with the metros. “We started building trust and working together and today I’m proud to say that we are celebrating the good work that we have done.”

She added that corruption and low morale had also been significant problems which she had been working to overcome.

“Policing is a calling for me and, believe me‚ I’m one person who wants to work with my community and wants to work with the people in Gauteng. I will not sit down and rest.

“I’m going to be involved in my community to ensure that we bring crime down in Gauteng. I don’t need any pay. I want just to be involved to make sure that our women and children‚ our people‚ will walk free on the streets of Gauteng.”

The MEC for Community Safety Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane said that she had not been formally informed that De Lange would be leaving nor has she been provided with reasons why.
