Stay safe during load-shedding

SANDTON – With Eskom implementing load-shedding, residents need to stay safe.

With the increasing possibility of load-shedding by national electricity supplier, Eskom, the community should know what to do during power outages.

Load-shedding is not only a frustration but can also pose certain threats to your safety and security. To combat the pitfalls of load-shedding, Sandton Chronicle approached David de Villiers of ZSS Security, to provide some tips on what you can do.

De Villiers said it is important to keep an emergency kit with torches, extra batteries, some water, granola bars, plasters and any medical necessities like an asthma pump or chronic medication.

“Always keep your panic button on your person in case you need help quickly and do regular security system checks with your security company,” he said.

Another important thing is to ensure your alarm battery is in good working order and try to keep a spare battery just in case.

In addition, he provided the following tips:

  •  Keep your doors and windows locked at all times and do not go outside at any time. Call your security company to check your perimeter
  •  Keep all power banks and any spare cell phone or cell phone batteries charged
  •  Keep rechargeable lights fully charged to ensure you and your family are not left in the dark
  •  When using candles, ensure you keep them in a candleholder and away from children or any flammable materials
  •  Ensure that there is always a fire extinguisher on hand in case of emergencies.

“Always stay vigilant and listen for any strange or unusual sounds,” ended De Villiers.
