Nelson Mandela Foundation launches Shave to Remember

SANDHURST – The Shave to Remember campaign encourages South Africans to shave a path in their hair reminiscent of Nelson Mandela's trademark style.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation, in partnership with Philips, launched their new campaign, Shave to Remember, in Sandton to encourage South Africans to live out Nelson Mandela’s legacy.

The campaign encourages South Africans to shave a path in their hair, reminiscent of a young Mandela’s trademark style and embody the values of the South African icon.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation is commemorating Madiba’s centenary under the theme “Be the Legacy”, a call to action for all citizens of the world to live the values of Madiba. The Foundation is rallying individuals and organisations to dismantle the unequal structures of power and protect the most vulnerable through actions and dialogue.

Luzuko Koti, the director of communication at the Nelson Mandela Foundation, said that when Mandela ushered in a new democracy the country was filled with optimism and hope. However, more than 20 years into the democracy the country still faces numerous challenges.

“The time is opportune to be addressing the remaining challenges of our multifaceted nation and this campaign will help us to remember that,” said Koti.

“We shave to remember the path we have walked behind them as the leaders of our struggle. The steadiness we have felt while standing on their broad shoulders. We shave as a reminder that the path ahead is longer and much more complex and that the next generation will be harsher on us than we are on the Mandela of yesterday.”

Koti added that the haircut is about more than starting a trend but rather focuses on encouraging people to reflect and ultimately reignite Mandela’s legacy.

Ntutule Tshenye, the general manager for Philips, shared stories of how Mandela had an impact on his life and hopes that the campaign will inspire others to embrace his legacy. “Captivated by Madiba’s legacy, and as a proud partner of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, we believe that the campaign will bring his values to life through solidarity, reflection, and a deep sense of personal inspection.”

The shaving drive will kick-off on Youth Day, 16 June, when South Africans are urged to head to their local barber, get the haircut, and take pictures and post them on social media using the tag #ShaveToRemember.
