Beanies for Beings collects sports equipment for less fortunate youths

BRYANSTON – Residents are encouraged to donate used sports equipment for needful children.

Beanies for Beings, a non-profit organisation, aims to collect sports equipment in Bryanston to be donated to underprivileged children.

Megan Botha, the founder of the organisation, said she had never intended to start up a non-profit but rather found herself becoming more and more involved with charitable initiatives. For her birthday last year, Botha wanted to knit 460 beanies for underprivileged children but ended up making over 1 000.

Now, Botha has registered her non-profit and works full-time collecting donations and meeting with caregivers from various charitable organisations. This month, Botha is dedicated to collecting sporting goods but says that she changes this every month to ensure that a variety of needs are met.

“I work a lot in townships and so we realised that there are so many children who don’t have access to sports equipment and don’t have the opportunity to grow their skills.”

Botha added that sport provides an opportunity for youngsters to have a healthy pastime and there are so many children with a talent yet no opportunity to hone their skills.

She added that there has been a fantastic response to her efforts and many people have contributed sports equipment. However, the initiative is not only about donating goods to people in need but rather about building relationships with people in the community.

“I build relationships with all these people; it’s not about a once-off donation for me,” she said. Volunteers are encouraged to get involved with Beanies for Beings as Botha does much of the work herself.

“We have been so abundantly blessed to see it grow the way it has.”

Items can be dropped off at the Little Field Mouse shop at the Bryanston Shopping Centre. For more information about drop-off locations visit the Beanies for Beings Facebook page.
